Description

This cottage, located approximately 20 meters west of Oaker, dates from the late 17th century and has undergone modifications, including raising the eaves in the mid-19th century and later additions. It features a timber frame with rendered and painted brick infill on a high rubblestone plinth to the right, with the eaves raised in brick and partly roughcast. The roof is slate-covered. The original layout is a two-cell baffle-entry plan, with a lower 19th-century gabled rubblestone addition on the south gable end, where the ground level drops.

The best-preserved framing is on the east side, showcasing square panels, three of which extend from the cill to the wall-plate. The structure has collar and tie beam end trusses with V-struts from the collars and short straight braces from the wall posts to the tie beam. The position of an infilled two-light wooden mullion window is visible on the north gable end. The west side features three 19th-century cast-iron latticed casements just below the eaves, with 20th-century casements on either side of a boarded door located to the left of center. There is also a 19th-century leaded casement on the high plinth to the right.

A rendered rubblestone stack is positioned immediately in front of the ridge to the right of center, featuring a dripstone and a top that was rebuilt in late 19th-century red brick. There is a brick projection for a bread oven beneath this stack. The original baffle entry is marked by a boarded door located under a bracketed lean-to hood on the east side, directly beneath the stack. The interior could not be inspected during the last survey in September 1986, but it is likely to be of interest.
