Description

This is a mid-17th century house, which was later partly converted into a malthouse and then a shop, now returned to residential use. It underwent remodelling in the early 19th century and has seen later additions and alterations. The house is timber framed with rendered infill, a plinth of painted uncoursed limestone rubble, and a plain tile roof. It has two storeys, with three storeys to the former malthouse section, which also includes a semi-basement. The timber framing is arranged in square panels, two and a half panels high from the sill to the wall plate. Most of the windows are 19th-century casements, with the exception of two 20th-century leaded casements in the timber-framed section and a 17th-century wooden mullion window with 20th-century leaded lights in the upper right-hand side. A half-glazed door is on the left side, leading to an external stone staircase with a 20th-century nail-studded plank door beneath, and a nail-studded plank door on the right. The interior was significantly altered in the late 20th century but retains chamfered ceiling beams and exposed joists within the former malthouse. The timber-framed section and rubblestone addition on the right have a double-purlin roof in three bays, with a mix of collar and tie beam trusses and raking struts from the tie beams to the principal rafters. A gabled projection to the rear, which previously housed a kiln, has now been converted into a kitchen.
