Sundial Approximately 20 Metres South Of Marrington Lodge

The sundial, dated 1595, is located approximately 20 meters south of Marrington Lodge. It was created for Richard Lloyd and is made of limestone. The sundial features a square pillar on a chamfered square base. Each side of the pillar is intricately carved with various figures and emblems, including the mottoes and arms of the Lloyd family of Marrington Hall.

On the north face, there is a figure of a man dressed in late 16th-century clothing, along with the inscription "VThO/RASTIC/VITA" and a carving of a horse's head above. The west face displays a plant with a lozenge shape above it, interlocking serpents topped by a horse's head, the date "1595," and a rosette at the top. The south face features an owl sitting in a tree with a floriated cross above, a torso of a skeleton with the inscription "FVI.VT/ES.ERIS/ VT.SVM" carved in raised lettering below, and a scratchdial at the top with the inscription "DEUS MIHI/LUX." The east face has an armorial shield with three lions rampant, a lozenge shape, a griffin, and a shield with two birds and a horse's head above.

Each face of the sundial has indentations and various scratchdials designed to catch the sun's rays at seven different points. There are positions for seven gnomons, with three at the top and one at the base, while three gnomons for the plinth are missing as of the last survey in November 1985. The initials "R.LL" (for Richard Lloyd) are carved on the plinth, accompanied by a long superscription around the edge that is largely indecipherable. Another faint superscription at the top edge of the pillar is believed to read, "FROM DAI TO DAIE THESE SHADES DO FLEE AND SO THIS LIFE PASSETH AWAIE."

Originally, the sundial was situated on the lawn at Marrington Hall but was moved to its current location in the mid-1950s. Marrington Lodge is not included in this listing.
