Description

No. 24 High Street is an inn that has been converted into a café. It has an early 17th-century core with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features painted timber framing with painted brick infilling, and some brick areas are designed to imitate timber framing. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and include three 19th-century integral brick ridge stacks, as well as a slate roof with a corbelled brick verge and eaves, along with a 19th-century integral brick eaves stack.

The structure has a rectangular plan that runs parallel to the street and consists of four framed bays, with a later cross wing gable added to the north. The building is two storeys high with an attic. The street-facing front originally had square framing that was four panels high, with raised eaves featuring an additional panel and a pair of straight tension braces on each end bay. There are four 19th-century wood casements with mullions and transoms, and a central recessed panelled door set in a slightly projecting porch with a pediment.

To the right, at the corner of The Square, there is a 19th-century brick gabled addition that also has painted imitation timber framing. This addition features a 19th-century mullion and transom window on both the ground and first floors, as well as a two-light leaded casement in the attic. The gable-end return wall facing The Square includes a 19th-century mullion and transom window above a panelled door. The left return of the timber-framed range is painted and rendered, with a casement window on the first floor. The rear of the building has been extended with 19th-century additions. The interior has not been inspected.
