Description

17 High Street is a house that was originally built in the early 18th century and later served as a hotel in the early 20th century before returning to residential use. The building is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings, which include rusticated quoins, string courses, recessed rectangular panels beneath the window sills, and a painted plinth. It features a plain-tile hipped roof with heavy moulded corniced eaves and an integral brick stack on the left return side. The structure has a rectangular plan with a gable end facing the street.

The exterior is two stories high with an attic. The street front displays a two-story, two-window range of 6/6 sash windows with painted rendered reveals, gauged brick lintels, moulded sills on the first floor, and plain sills on the ground floor. There is a central pedimented dormer that contains a 2-light multi-pane casement window. On the right return side, there is a central doorway featuring 6 panelled double doors set in a flat fluted pilaster doorcase, topped with a segmental radial fanlight, fluted brackets, and an entablature adorned with carved medallions. Above the doorway is an 8/8 sash window, with another sash window to the right, both having cambered heads. A small dormer window is also present.

Inside, the building has a central panelled hall that includes a dog-leg staircase with a toad-back handrail, carved balusters, and moulded open string nosings. The interior features fielded dado panelling and fielded panelled doors with moulded frames that incorporate semicircular plain wood tympani.
