Description

The churchyard wall, stiles, and gates located to the north and west of the Church of St Lawrence in Church Stretton date from the late 18th century. The walls are constructed from stone rubble and feature ashlar copings. There are cast-iron gates and a stile supported by oak posts. The walls extend approximately 50 meters along the north side of the churchyard and about 65 meters along the west side. They were recorded as newly built in 1792, funded by public subscription, and include carved initials on the wall that are believed to belong to the parish subscribers.

The west gate, which separates the west wall, consists of a pair of wide, low cast-iron gates adorned with cusped lancet-headed balusters and a quatrefoil middle rail, hung on a braced post with finials. At the north-west corner, there is a stile and gate made of three oak posts with carved heads that support an old stile and a 20th-century metal gate. The stile features double sandstone ashlar steps with a 19th-century cast-iron low screen positioned above and between the posts. At the east end of the north wall, another stile and gate consist of three oak posts (two of which have been renewed) supporting a 20th-century metal gate and wooden stile rails above older double sandstone ashlar steps.
