Stables And Covered Cartway About 40 Metres West North West Of Hoards Park Farmhouse

The stables and covered cartway, located about 40 metres west-northwest of Hoards Park Farmhouse, date from the 16th and 17th centuries, with an extension added in the 18th century. The structure is timber-framed with brick infilled panels set on a brick plinth, and features a wing made of red brick in English garden wall bond, along with some red sandstone ashlar. The roof is covered with plain clay tiles and has gabled ends, while the wing includes a brick dentil eaves cornice.

The building has a T-shaped plan. The southern part of the cartway originally started as a two-storey one-cell building with close-studding, likely used as a granary. A short timber-framed range was added to the east end in the 17th century. The cartway itself was created in the 17th century by adding a short timber-framed range to the north and roofing over the space in between. In the 18th century, a brick wing was added to the east side of the southern bay.

On the exterior, the timber-framed range features a box-frame with square panels and tension-braces at the corners, with brick facing at the south end. There is a full-height cartway through the center, which includes short braces at the top corners, stable doors, and loft openings. A gabled bay projects from the west side, showcasing close-studding and corner-posts with long jowls. Inside, there are timber-framed partitions on either side of the cartway, along with queen-strut trusses and tenoned or butt purlins.
