NORTON WOOLPIT ROAD Stables and cartlodge, 40m south of Street Farmhouse

GV II

Stable range with cartlodge attached to south end. Late C16 core, altered late C17 and C19. About 8 bays. Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Corrugated iron roof, once thatched (low-pitched C19 pantiled roof to cartlodge). Pairs of C19 boarded stable doors, and two larger pairs of doors. The end bays (about 4) adjacent to the road contain altered late C16 work: arch windbraced studding and clasped purlin roof, evidence for various original features such as doorways and studded partitions. Extended to west in late C17 with primary-braced oak studding: this section includes the cartlodge of 3 bays. This has original archbraced binding beams for a granary floor above. In C19 the cartlodge walls were lowered, and a further bay added to west.
