Description
Sonde Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, possibly incorporating earlier materials, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It features a timber-framed box-frame structure with square panels filled with painted brick and a machine tile roof with gabled ends. The building has a large rendered brick axial stack.
The layout consists of a one-storey and attic main southeast range with a two-room plan, and a one-storey and attic wing to the northwest, creating an L-shaped plan with a porch in the southwest angle. The large axial stack at the junction of the ranges likely serves all three rooms.
On the exterior, the two-storey and attic southeast range has a prominent central gable and various small casement windows. The framing includes small sections, jowled posts, and short tension braces. There is a later lean-to porch in the southwest angle with a plank door inside, and a 19th-century open work porch on the northeast side, also with a plank door. Attached to the northwest gabled end is a single-storey range of outbuildings from the 19th century.
Inside, the farmhouse is said to have moulded cross-beams and joists, along with a blocked fireplace, while other rooms feature chamfered ceiling beams.
