Description

This building is a barn with integral stables and a cowhouse, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish stretcher bond and features a machine tile roof with shaped brick coping on the gable parapets, supported by stone kneelers.

The structure has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a three-bay barn and an integral cowhouse in the main range, with stables positioned at right angles to the barn.

On the southwest front, the barn includes a large segmental arch cart doorway designed for plank double doors, and a large round pitching eye to the left, which has a stone cill and is flanked by diamond-pattern ventilation holes. To the left, the lower single-storey cowhouse has two doorways and three windows, all with segmental arch heads. The stable wing on the right features a central doorway with a plank door and flanking windows, all with segmental arches, as well as a pitching eye in the gable end with pigeon holes above. The southeast side of the barn has a gable end with a giant arch that is pierced with ventilation holes in the brickwork. The rear northeast side includes a central cart entrance to the barn, flanked by pitching eyes with stone cills and diamond-pattern ventilation holes, and a lower cowhouse on the right with double doors to the left.

Inside, the barn has a three-bay structure with a tie-beam and queen-strut roof, where the struts only support the purlins, and the principal rafters and ridgeboard remain intact. The stables feature a chamfered softwood ceiling beam and unchamfered joists, although the stalls are missing.
