Description
Lower Hall is an exceptional timber-framed gabled house, dating from the 17th century, situated within a walled garden opposite the church. The front of the house was roughcast in the 18th century, and sash windows have been inserted. It features continuous, slight overhangs on the first floor and attic levels, with moulded bressumers. The house is two storeys high, plus an attic. Five closely spaced windows are set within rusticated pargeting surrounds and wide, painted wood frames. Sashes, designed to resemble earlier windows, now occupy the space where an Ionic pedimented porch once stood at the centre of the front. Three attic gables are present, the central one being smaller and containing a round window from the 19th century; old wood casements are on the left and right. The old ridge tile roof terminates on the right in a splayed corner bay. End-projecting stone chimneys have tall, coupled brick stacks positioned diagonally. The main part of the house, including a parallel wing at the rear which may be of earlier date, is square in plan. To the side and back are long, timber-framed, two-storeyed office wings.
