Description
The former Church of St John is a disused chapel located in Shrewsbury, originally constructed in the 13th century with modifications from the 17th century and early 19th century. It is built from random rubble sandstone, with some brickwork, and features a plain tiled roof. The structure consists of a single cell that served as the chancel of a once larger building. The west wall has been largely infilled in the 19th century, while remnants of sandstone walling can be found on either side, with part squared and the lower courses appearing rough as if cut away. The main section of the wall is made of brick, featuring wood interlocking tracery in the window and a small doorway beneath it with a plain wood case. The north wall has three hollow chamfered lancet lights, and the south wall has three splayed lancets, with the outer windows having round-arched heads beside a square-headed central light. The side walls are clearly raised in squared rubble, and the east wall has stepped lancet windows. Inside, there is a crude stone bowl font and a single early 17th-century roof truss, which includes a moulded tie beam, collar, and splat struts.
