Description
Number 6, The Armoury and Armoury Mews are former officer’s housing and workshops, dating to circa 1806. They were designed by James Wyatt for the Shrewsbury Armoury. The building is constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof. Number 6 is a three-window range of two storeys, featuring a central entrance with a later porch. It has 12-pane sash windows with wide splayed heads on the ground floor, and a blind central window above. The roof has end wall stacks with hips. To the left of Number 6 is a single-storey wing, originally workshops and now a separate dwelling (Armoury Mews). Some original openings retaining the characteristic wide splayed heads are still visible. Several windows were inserted during the 20th century when the building was converted into dwellings. Included in the listing is a short stretch of boundary wall, with a substantial pier featuring a chamfered stone capital, which separates Armoury Mews from London Road.
