Description
The cider press, located approximately 40 metres northeast of The Nursery, is a disused structure from the late 18th century. It is built from regularly coursed and dressed sandstone blocks, with red brick used for the first floor of the gable ends, and features a graded slate roof. The building is one storey tall with a gable-lit loft. It has round-arched windows with brick heads on the long sides and segmental-headed openings in the gable ends. The entrance is located in one gable end, featuring an elliptical arch with a projecting keystone above a stone lintel.
Inside, the stone press is intact, complete with a circular grooved base. There is also housing for a circular screw in the floor of the loft, although the loft was originally continuous and is now missing its central section. The roof is supported by a single-purlin structure in three bays, which includes two queen-post trusses, one of which has curved principals.
At the time of the last survey in May 1986, the screw for the press was situated in the garden of Rowley, which is not included in this listing.
