Description
The School House is a house dating from the mid-15th century, with later additions and alterations. It is timber framed, partly constructed using cruck techniques, and features painted brick infill and plain tile roofs. The building has a T-plan layout, consisting of one bay of a truncated former open hall and a two-bay solar to the north. It stands two storeys high, with close studding framing that includes a middle rail and curved tension braces in the solar. The hall range is clad in brick, although part of a cruck blade is visible at the southeast corner.
The windows are all from the late 19th and 20th centuries, with the front (former solar) featuring two 2-light casements on the first floor and one single-light casement to the left of the central entrance. There is a late 19th-century gable brick porch with an ogee outer arch and a pointed wooden finial, leading to a 20th-century half-glazed door. The house has an external red brick end stack to the right and another stack behind the ridge to the left, both with three attached diamond shafts, likely from the late 19th century. However, a similar external stack on the gable of the hall range is probably from the late 16th or early 17th century. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
