Description

The Lacon Childe School is a building with a complex history, dating back to 1740, with extensions built around the 1890s and additions around 1900. It is constructed of stone rubble with an ashlar facade and cornice, and has a hipped roof covered with plain tiles. The building features brick ridge stacks. The plan is a simple rectangle, with later 19th-century set-back wings and significant 20th-century ranges to the rear.

The main facade is two storeys and an attic, with a five-window arrangement of 6/6 sash windows, featuring projecting keyblocks on the south side, all restored except for the ground-floor window on the right. A central doorcase has a rosette architrave, topped by a fascia and broken pediment with an apex crest, which incorporates a crest. The door is a six-panelled design with glazed top panels. Three tiled gabled dormers are positioned on the roof; the central one has been restored and features a two-light casement. An octagonal wooden bell turret with a cupola roof, a ball finial, and a weather-vane is also present.

To the left side is a single-storey, stone-gabled wing dating from around 1890, known as the Baldwyn-Childe Dining Hall. The doorcase fascia bears the inscription: "Sir Lacon William Childe of Kinlet, Knight, by his will endowed this school, the building was erected in 1740." The interior of the school has not been inspected.

The school was re-founded in 1835 as a free school for 20 boarders, with a house for the headmaster. It became a private school in 1890, and was sold to the Local Education Authority in 1935.
