Description

Apothecaries House is an early 18th-century house, built on the site of an earlier building and extensively restored in the 20th century. It is constructed of brick with a plain tiled roof and some internal timbering. The main south-facing elevation has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window range beneath a wide gable that has been partially rebuilt. The ground floor has French windows, while the first floor has 12-pane sash windows. There are two-light casements in the attic. A side entrance is also present. A narrower gable to the right has a single window to each floor, creating a flying freehold over part of the adjacent property at No.10 College Hill. An axial brick chimney stack is visible.

The interior features a wide entrance hall running the length of the rear of the house, with an early 18th-century staircase having turned balusters and a closed string. A late 18th-century marble fireplace, in the Adam style, is located in one ground-floor room. Significant remains of an earlier timber frame survive, largely re-sited within the roof structure. These include one deeply moulded beam, possibly dating from the 16th century. During the recent restoration, two painted plaster panels were removed from window embrasures.
