Description
The gatehouse adjoining Lilleshall Hall to the northeast was built between 1829 and 1832 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville in a Tudor Gothic style. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features slate roofs. The building is two stories with an attic and has one and a half story wings.
The entrance front includes a plinth, corner gargoyles, and a coped parapet with gables on both the front and back. It has parapeted gable ends, end stacks, and a central wooden arched cupola topped with an ogee lead top and weathervane. There is a small attic lancet in the gable and a central first-floor canted oriel window with a carved coat of arms above and an uncarved tablet below. The large central chamfered round entrance arch is flanked by lancets, with stone globes at the corners, and features two panelled wooden gates with iron cresting. The rear is similar in design. Inside the arch, there is a large round arched recess to the south and four centred arched panelled doors to the north and south.
The wings have a plinth, parapeted gable ends, and a three-light gabled dormer. They also feature two two-light ground floor windows with returned hoodmoulds. On the east side, there are two large carved stone lions flanking the arch, and on the west side, there are two cast iron eagles with outstretched wings flanking the arch.
