Description

Hopton Court is a house with a mid-18th century core, significantly remodelled in the early 19th century for Thomas Botfield. The remodelling is believed to have been based on designs attributed to John Nash. The house is constructed of rendered brick with integral eaves chimneys and a hipped slate roof.

The south-west front has a three-storey, five-window arrangement with six-over-six sash windows, and three-over-six sashes on the second floor. A central doorway on the ground floor is set back under a portico consisting of eight paired, unfluted Ionic columns with a balustrade. The north-west facade features a similar three-storey, three-window arrangement, also with six-over-six sashes and three-over-six sashes on the second floor, alongside a pair of ground-floor hipped slate-roofed canted bay windows, each with a six-over-six sash on each face and a further sash window. The south-east facade mirrors the north-west facade, with an additional portico set between the bay windows, featuring four unfluted columns supporting a continuous first-floor balustrade. This facade has a central pair of partly glazed panelled doors, and a pediment with a coat of arms set in the tympanum, projecting above the eaves. A two-storey service wing is attached to the right.

The north-east side, which forms the rear face, has an advanced brick section. A central sixteen-pane-over-twelve-pane sash window is flanked by six-over-six sashes—one of which has been replaced with a multi-pane casement—with a three-over-six sash window above, all with cambered lintels. The ground floor is partially obscured by later two- and single-storey projecting wings. The interior of the house was not inspected during the listing process.
