Description

Model farmbuildings dating from approximately 1875 were designed by Lloyd Williams and Underwood of Denbigh, with minor 20th-century additions and alterations. They are constructed of yellow Ruabon brick with some ashlar dressings, and have slate roofs.

The farm buildings are grouped around two yards, a south yard for stabling and carts, and a north yard for livestock, partially separated by a large byre with a loft and a lower extension to the west. The west side of the south yard is defined by a brick wall, the west side of the north yard by a threshing barn and engine house, and the north side of the north yard by a milking shed. The buildings are one and two storeys high.

The east-facing entrance front is symmetrical in style and extends across the full length of both yards. It features round-arched cart entries leading to the yards through double gates within a wider and taller central five-bay range. The outer arches are blind and segmental-headed, and are flanked by projecting, three-bay, pedimented end walls to the byre. Each range terminates in a slightly projecting, blind, three-bay corner pavilion (the left formerly a coachman's house), with a pedimented gable and a lunette window. Moulded and dentilled cornices run along the three pediments and above the cart entrances. The central projection's pediment contains a round-headed arch with a moulded keystone and banded rusticated brick pillars framing a three-round-headed-light stone window supported by cast-iron columns with Early English capitals and bases. The tympanum of the window contains a circular stone opening, possibly formerly for a clock, with blind segmental-headed openings with keystones to the left and right.

Inside the south yard, the west gable wall of the byre has a twin round-headed window with a loft door to the right, above an inserted 20th-century entrance. The threshing barn on the west side of the north yard has pairs of triple slit vents, either side of opposing cart entrances with wooden sliding doors on external tracks. Single sets of air vents are placed on each floor of the gables, which have projecting single-purlin ends.

The engine house, located to the north-west of the barn, is a square tower with a shallow hipped roof and wide eaves. A square chimney stack projects from the south-west corner, with an octagonal shaft, a stone cornice, and a parapet. The tower has three narrow recessed panels on each side, rising from a high, offset plinth with strips separated by offset courses at intermediate levels. The upper and lower ends of the recesses are corbelled, with offset courses and bands picked out in black glazed brick.

A four-bay cart shelter on the south side of the south yard has a continuous chamfered lintel with three brick pillars dividing vehicle bays. Segmental-headed windows are present above the left, second from left, and right bays, with a segmental-headed boarded door to the third bay from the left. External steps are located at the right gable end.

The interior of the byre has a loft floor supported by braced, chamfered beams and stone corbels.
