Description
This barn, located approximately 25 metres north of Underhill Hall, dates from the mid-17th century and has undergone alterations in the early 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed with red brick nogging and has been partly rebuilt using roughly squared and coursed red sandstone with red brick dressings. The roof is made of corrugated iron. The structure consists of three framed bays, featuring square panels with five sections from the sole plate to the wall plate, short straight corner braces, and long straight tension braces. There are three pitching openings, six lower 20th-century casements, and two doors, although the center door has been blocked. The truss in the right-hand gable end includes a tie-beam, two collars, and struts, while the left-hand gable is weatherboarded. Although the interior was not inspected, a 19th-century inserted floor was noted, along with pairs of purlins visible at the gable ends. One panel of wattle and daub survives high up on the north-east side. This barn is part of a small farmstead group that includes Underhill Hall.
