SMETHCOTE C.P. Barn approx. 25 metres to north of Underhill Hall

GV II

Barn, latterly cow house, now disused. Mid-C17 with early C18 and C19 alterations. Timber framed with red brick nogging, partly rebuilt in roughly squared and coursed red sandstone with red brick dressings; corrugated iron roof. 3 framed bays. Framing: square panels (5 from sole plate to wall plate) with short straight corner braces and long straight tension braces. 3 pitching openings, 6 lower C20 casements, and 2 doors (centre blocked). Truss in right-hand gable end with tie-beam, 2 collars, and struts. Weatherboarded left-hand gable. Interior not inspected but C19inserted floor noted. Pairs of purlins (see ends in gable). One wattle and daub panel survives high up to the left in the north-east side. The barn forms part of a small farmstead group including Underhill Hall (q.v.).
