Description

Farmhouse. Built or extensively remodelled in 1635, with 20th-century restoration. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble with stone slate roofs. It has an L-shaped layout, with the main wing aligned north-west/south-east, facing southwest, and a second wing adjoining at the southeast end and extending to the northeast. A central stack backs onto a through-passage in the second wing, while a southeast gable end stack has an adjoining stone winder staircase. The southeast front of the main wing has a gable to the left. There’s a small rectangular window illuminating the stairway to the left, and a 20th-century casement window to the right of the stack. The second wing, which is single-storey with an attic, is to the right and features a large 20th-century casement window to the left of a porch, and a squat, wooden-framed doorway with a battened door. Remnants of two wooden-framed windows with diamond-shaped mullions and rough hoodmoulds are visible on the northeast gable end.

The interior remains largely intact, though extensively restored, with plank-and-muntin panelled partitions creating the main divisions. An arched-headed doorway in a partition bears the date 1635, with a similar doorway leading to the stairway. A triangular-headed doorway in the partition between the through-passage and the northeast end service room in the second wing has been widened in later times, reportedly to accommodate the passage of barrels. The main room of the main wing has good chamfered beams and a large open fireplace. A further open fireplace is present in the second wing. The second wing may represent the earlier part of the house, which was extensively remodelled in 1635.
