Description
Ruinsford is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with some parts rendered, and features stone slate roofs. The building has a rectangular plan that is aligned northeast to southwest and faces southeast. There are 20th-century extensions on the southeast front, which obscure what was likely a former through-passage. The southwest gable end has a main stack and a stone winder stairway.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has two 20th-century windows. To the left on the ground floor, there is a glazed lean-to porch, and a further window is located to the right. Inside, the property retains notable features such as good chamfered ceiling beams with half-pyramidal stops and chamfered plank and muntin panelling in the main division of the house on both the ground and upper floors. There is also a stone winder staircase with oak treads, one of which has a barely distinguishable date inscribed, possibly from 1630. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England suggests that the house may have originally been timber-framed.
