Description
The Young Women's Christian Association, formerly known as No. 17 St Owen Street, is a house that has been converted into a YWCA annexe. It dates from the late 18th century and is constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof and brick end stacks. The building stands three storeys high and features a three-window range. The central window is blocked, flanked by 20th-century plain French windows with wrought-iron balcony guards, all set beneath grooved stucco lintels with keyblocks. Above, there is another blocked light and 4/4 sash windows, also with similar lintels, and the building has brick modillion eaves.
The central entrance consists of a six fielded-panel door with a lozenge-glazed overlight, located in moulded reveals and topped by a modillioned wood flat hood supported by fluted Doric pilasters. This entrance is flanked by 8/8 sash windows with similar lintels.
Inside, the building features a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a swan neck rail. On the first floor, there are four-panel doors, 19th-century fire surrounds, an overmantel, architraves, and ceiling coving. The ground floor includes a 19th-century fireplace, shutters, architrave, and wall cupboards. The hall has an arch, four-panel doors, a six-panel door, and a tiled polychrome floor. There is also a wing at the rear with plank doors.
