Description
The summerhouse, located about 100 yards west-south-west of Homme House, dates from the late 17th century and was altered in the 18th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and features hipped stone slate roofs topped with a wooden lantern. The building has an octagonal plan and includes a small octagonal stair turret attached to the south side. It stands two storeys high and has three oval openings that light the newel from different sides. The south side has a 4-centred entrance with a ledged and studded 17th-century door. Each face of the upper floor of the main octagon, except where it connects to the stair turret, has a pair of triangular-headed 18th-century wrought iron casements. The square western stack features a cylindrical stone shaft with four decorative oval openings near the top, one facing each cardinal point. Inside, there are chamfered segmental heads to the stone fireplace on each floor. This summerhouse is an unusually designed and well-detailed example, remaining in unrestored condition.
