Description
The building is a malthouse and byre, located about 24 yards north-north-west of Bury of Hope Farmhouse. It dates from the mid-18th century and was altered in the mid-19th century. The structure is partly made of sandstone rubble and has a plain tiled roof.
The malthouse is three storeys high and consists of four bays. The main east elevation features windows with ashlar surrounds, including two rectangular windows on the ground floor, four rectangular windows on the first floor, and four square windows on the second floor. There is a ledged and battened door to the left, and to the right, external sandstone steps lead up to a first-floor doorway. At the north end, there is a collar and tie-beam truss with four struts to the lower collar, three struts to the upper collar, and a V-strut in the apex. The interior, which was not inspected during the re-survey in June 1986, is said to have an interesting roof structure, and the maltings, including kilns and drying floors, are reported to have largely survived.
The byre is timber-framed and weatherboarded on a rubble base, topped with a corrugated metal roof. It has six framed bays adjoining the north gable end of the malthouse and is two levels high. The east elevation has ten doorways, and there are two square openings at the north gable end. Inside, there are two and three rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate. The north end features a collar and tie-beam truss with two collars, five struts to the lower collar, and three to the upper collar, along with intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts.
