Description

St Mary's Farmhouse is a timber-frame building, originally dating to the 16th century, with significant alterations and refacing in the 18th century and extensions in the late 18th century, along with some mid-20th century modifications. The structure is timber-framed and largely clad in painted rubble, with brick dressings, and has a slate roof. It is arranged in an L-shape, with limbs extending to the north and east. The north limb likely comprises three framed bays, and the east limb probably three bays, extended to the east in rubble. There are two brick stacks; one located to the east of the first bay of the east limb, and the other on the former gable end. The south front has a symmetrical arrangement of one plus five windows on the first floor, with a three-light window under a segmental head to the left, followed by two three-light casements, one two-light window, and finally two further two-light windows. The ground floor also has a symmetrical arrangement of one plus four windows, all three-light casements under segmental heads. The entrance is located to the left of the centre, sheltered by a 19th-century gabled, slated canopy with trellised sides, and has a 20th-century boarded door. The right-hand gable end displays a timber truss with raked struts forming lozenges. Inside, the ground floor room at the west end of the east limb has chamfered ceiling beams. In the cross-wing, two trusses are exposed on the upper floor, featuring arch-braced cambered ties and two struts to cambered collars.
