Description
A granary, likely dating from the 17th century, with alterations in the late 18th and 20th centuries. The building, now used as a store, stands approximately 20 yards east of Upper House Farmhouse. It is timber-framed with brick and rendered infill, some weatherboarding, set on a rubble base, and has a stone-tiled roof laid in diminishing courses. A handmade brick addition is also present. The granary has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a main range of three and a half framed bays and a further bay constructed of brick, aligned east/west, alongside a cross-wing of two framed bays at the east end. It is mainly two stories in height. The timber framing features three and four panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate. The roof structure incorporates collar and tie-beam trusses with struts and V-struts above the collar, with the cross-wing’s end trusses exhibiting two collars. The north elevation of the main range has a square ground-floor window, two square loft windows, a loft door, and two large doorways in the original section. The brick addition features external steps leading to a granary door. A weatherboarded lean-to addition is located at the eastern end, while the north end of the cross-wing is open. Inside, the roof displays chiefly intermediate tie-beam trusses with raking struts and two tiers of trenched purlins.
