Description

Wain Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and 20th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and features a roof that is part hipped, part covered with Welsh slate, and part tiled from the 20th century. The main house has a rectangular plan aligned north to south and originally included a through-passage and a north gable-end stack. At the south end, there is a cross-wing with an axial stack, and a 19th-century service wing extends to the east at the north end of the main house, along with further minor additions to the north and west.

The farmhouse is two storeys with attics. The east front features a half-dormer with a four-light window to the right, a three-light casement window to the left, and two similar windows to the right of a square-framed doorway, which has a ledged door adorned with decorative 17th-century hinges. The low walls flanking the doorway likely indicate the position of a former two-storey porch.

Inside the main house, there is an internal square-headed door-frame and ledged doors. The upper floor retains three plank-and-muntin panelled partitions, segmental-headed doorways, and ledged doors, along with chamfered ceiling beams on both floors. A three-light diamond mullioned window is intact in the former west external wall, although it is now obscured by later additions. The lower floor of the cross-wing features a section of plank-and-muntin panelling with a segmental-headed doorway and ledged door. Additionally, a large 19th-century cast iron range remains in the former large open fireplace, and a three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window can be seen in a small room to the rear, though it is largely obscured from the exterior.
