Description

The Thatched Cottage is a pair of cottages that have been combined into one dwelling. It likely dates from the late 17th century to the 18th century, with some later additions and alterations. The structure features a timber frame with plaster, wattle-and-daub, and brick infill, along with weatherboards. The roof is thatched and includes extruded cylindrical sandstone rubble bread ovens and stacks at each gable, with brick shafts for the stacks.

The building consists of three main structural bays aligned west-south-west to east-north-east, with a late 19th-century extension at the eastern end. It is one storey with an attic. The south elevation has two windows, which are 2-light mid-20th century casements set under eyebrow dormers. On the ground floor, there are three small mid-20th century windows to the left and a 3-light wrought iron casement window from the late 18th to early 19th century to the right of centre. There are two entries: one to the left of centre and another on the right-hand side, both featuring late 20th-century doors. To the right of the right-hand entry, there are two one-light windows, and the extreme right-hand side has a weatherboarded extension under thatch.

Inside, the cottage contains several ledged doors from the late 17th or 18th century, along with one segmental-headed chamfered doorhead. The trusses feature queen struts, except for the eastern one, which has a plain collar. The Thatched Cottage was previously known as Buona Ventura.
