Description

Brick House is a house that likely dates from the 17th century, with later alterations. It features a sandstone rubble plinth and a timber frame with plaster infill, mostly covered in render. The roof is slate with a brick stack. The building has a rectangular four-bay plan oriented north-north-west to south-south-east and stands two storeys tall.

The west elevation facing the road has a rendered finish with two windows on the first floor: a three-light mid-20th century casement on the left and a four-pane window on the right. The ground floor has three mid-20th century windows, all with segmental heads and glazing bars. The south gable is also rendered, featuring one window and a glazed mid-20th century door in the centre.

The east elevation displays exposed timber framing with four square panels from the cill to the wall-plate, and angle struts at each corner post from the cill beam. Inside, there is a fireplace with a pair of 12th century colonnettes and capitals decorated with palmettes. The roof space contains a fireplace with chamfered stone jambs that stop to pyramids. The south trusses have three struts from the ties to the collars, above which are V-struts. The north end features queen posts and a tie partly covered in plaster, which is decorated with early 17th century painted foliated circular designs. Several beams have lamb's tongue run-out chamfer stops. The 12th century colonnettes may have originated from Wigmore Abbey.
