Description
The Steppes is a building dating from around 1600, featuring two storeys and an attic, topped with a tiled roof. It is timber-framed with closely spaced studs and plastered infilling. The front facing the road has two gables, with a moulded beam at the base and later additions of bargeboards, pendants, and finials. Both the top and first floors project on a moulded bressummer. To the right, there is an 18th-century two-storey canted bay window with sash windows that have glazing bars. The gables contain two and three-light casement windows with leaded panes, while other sash windows also feature glazing bars. The entrance has a fielded panel door with a rectangular fanlight that includes glazing bars. Inside, the drawing room displays original moulded ceiling beams and double chamfered beams, along with moulded beams on the first floor. The Steppes is part of a group that includes Nos 7 to 15 (odd), Lanark House, No 19, and stables west of No 19.
