Description
The Old Talbot Inn, dating from around 1596, is a Grade II* listed building located on New Street. This two-storey inn features a timber-framed structure with tiled roofs and gabled fronts. The front is timber-framed with close-set studding and plastered infilling, while the rear is constructed of red brick. A 17th-century addition extends along most of the north front.
To the left of the central bay, there are two gables with close-set moulded studding, each containing 2, 3, and 4-light casement windows. To the right of the stairs, set back, are two more gables with close-set studding and a 3-light casement on the ground floor. The far left end features an 18th-century painted brick gable with glazing bars and one attic casement, along with segmental brick arches, a round-arched panelled door on the ground floor, and wide garage doors.
At the centre, there is a large canted bay on the first floor with a hipped roof supported by heavy brackets. An outshut on the right contains the stairs, with the inner wall of the stairs being timber-framed with close-set studding. The front door is particularly notable, flanked by Ionic pilasters that support an entablature with a strap work frieze. The door itself is ledged with pointed moulding at the top and has moulded vertical ribs below. The left spandrel features the initials I F A, while the right displays the date 1600. An iron bar loop remains on the inner side, and when the door is fully open, it closes off the entrance to the stairs.
Inside, the dining room on the right retains fine original late 16th-century panelling, with one upright bearing the date 1596. The west wall showcases a carved cornice and over-mantle with arched panels and figures between them. Both the dining room and upstairs areas have good stop-chamfered beams and uprights supported by corbels.
The Old Talbot Inn is part of a group that includes No 12, Vine House, Nos 18 to 24 (even), a barn at the rear of No 24, No 26, Glenmoir, Linden House, and Alviston House.
