Description
9 The Homend is a building dating from around 1600, originally timber-framed and later remodelled in the 18th century. It has been stuccoed and features a new tiled roof with gabled ends. The building stands three storeys tall and has two small splayed bay windows with sash frames on the first floor, which are set on carved soffits. There is a continuous cornice above the first floor and the bay windows. On the second floor, there are two small sash windows in moulded casings, featuring vertical glazing bars. The ground floor has a large Victorian shop front that includes a dentilled cornice and pilasters. Behind the modern front, there is said to be an original post with a bracketed head. Some exposed timber framing can be seen on the south return. At the rear, there is a long timber-framed wing that has a four-light wood mullion/transom window. The building is part of a group with Nos 1 to 21 (odd) and Nos 1 to 5 (consecutive) Church Street.
