Description
The Philips memorial is a chest tomb located about 20 meters north of the north porch of the Church of St Mary. It commemorates John Philips, who died in 1784. The tomb is made of ashlar stone, with the ends designed to look like small ashlar blocks, which return as pilasters. The inscription panel is framed by similar decorative elements. The inscription reads: "[In] Memory of John Philips/ late of Wye-Side in Clifford/ who died ye 12th day of July 1784/ in the 74th Year of his Age/ [4 more lines]." This memorial is a fine example of stone masonry and enhances the church's setting, contributing to the group value of the other memorials in the churchyard.
