Description

This barn, located about 45 yards north-west of Hurstley Court, likely dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century and has undergone later alterations. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with a brick plinth, featuring a timber frame with woven infill, sandstone rubble, and weatherboards. The roofs are made of corrugated iron and Welsh slate. The barn has an irregular plan, consisting of a seven-bay range oriented roughly north-east to south-west, with a three-bay addition at a right angle to the north-west and a second three-bay addition skewed eastwards from the triangular bay at the north-east end of the main range.

The structure has two levels, and the south elevation presents a rough crescent shape. There is a wagon entry with two-leaved ledged doors located two bays in from the left side of the sandstone rubble. A second opposed wagon entry, also with two-leaved ledged doors, is positioned to the right of the center of the main range, which features exposed woven infill in the top row of panels above the weatherboarding. Attached to the right of the main range is a three-bay section that is two storeys high, showcasing exposed woven infill and three ledged doors, along with a stable door to the right. The north elevation includes a projecting three-bay weatherboarded section on the right-hand side. The frame consists of three square panels high from the cill to the wall-plate, except for the eastern two-storey part, which has four panels. Inside, the barn features triple angle struts in some of the trusses, while the others have raking struts.
