Description
Hatsford Farmhouse, likely built in the late 17th century, underwent significant expansions in the early 19th century. The structure is composed of sandstone rubble, brick, stucco, and timber-framing, topped with hipped slate roofs at the front and end stacks. The building features an irregular parallel range plan, with a 19th-century section flanked by a 17th-century timber-framed range to the east, connected by a possibly early 19th-century range to the north. The farmhouse has a cellar beneath the timber-framed section and stands two storeys tall.
The west elevation displays two bays with four-light glazing bar casements on the ground floor and three-light casements on the first floor. It features an early 20th-century gabled central porch and an early 19th-century six-panel door, complemented by a stucco finish, a moulded wooden eaves cornice, and a steeply hipped roof. The north range, made of sandstone rubble and attached to the left, includes one three-light casement on each floor and a glazed door near the junction with the main range. The rear timber-framed section showcases heavy framing, four panels high, and a large external stack with a bread oven on the east side.
Inside, the principal room of the timber-framed part has wide oak floorboards over the cellar and large ceiling beams with straight-cut chamfer-stops. The 19th-century section features box shutters on the west windows.
To the west of the north range, there are gates and railings that extend for about 15 yards. The two-leafed gates are made of wrought iron with segmental rails, while the railings have fleur-de-lys finials on the bars and dogbars, curving down to a finialed post west of the gates.
