Description
The Rowans is a house with a late 16th century core that has been remodelled and altered in the 18th century, with mid-19th century and 20th century additions. It features a timber frame with a sandstone plinth and stacks, rendered infill, and a slate roof. The building has an irregular plan, originally L-shaped, with later additions. The main elevation faces south and includes a central entrance flanked by two lateral stacks to the east. The house is two storeys high, with a cellar and attic. The south front has two glazing bar sash windows, a gabled porch, and a part-glazed door. There are also 2-light stone mullioned windows beside the doorway that light the cellar. The original house's framing is largely intact, consisting of five square panels from the sill to the wall-plate. Inside, there is a fine staircase featuring square newels and splat balusters, with later turned balusters on the top flight. The 20th century additions to the west are not of special interest.
