Description
HOPE MANSELL CP - SO 61 NW
8/14 Ye Old Cottage, Street Farm
- II
House. Late C17 with remains of earlier timber-frame. Sandstone rubble with some timber-framing and slate roof. Two storeys. West wall of two bays, with rebated and chamfered mullioned windows of three and four lights on the ground floor and windows with plain reveals on the first floor. Above an addition against the north gable wall is some exposed framing, including a tie-beam truss with two collars. The north gable wall has projecting chimney stack. To its right is a chamfered doorway, with a 2-light mullioned window on the first floor and an attic window with plain reveals. Part of the east wall has been rebuilt. To the left is a 2-light mullioned window. In the centre are external stone steps to a first floor doorway, and at the right is a doorway. Interior: the east wall contains the end wall of a demolished timber-framed range which once existed to the east. On the ground floor are two principal posts and a rail. Visible on the first floor are the tie-beam and the lower parts of the principals. The ground floor ceiling has exposed chamfered joists. A timber-framed dividing wall is now broken through but contains no evidence for an original doorway, suggesting that the wing may have contained service rooms entered from a hall. A stone fireplace on the ground floor has splayed jambs and a chamfered and stopped bressummer.
