Description

Castle Cliffe, now part of Hereford Technical College Annexe and offices, dates from the 19th century, with origins in the medieval period. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with a hipped roof covered in old plain tiles, a slate gable to the left, and various brick stacks, some rendered. It comprises two storeys and a four-window range. The windows are generally stone mullioned, with some 2-light mullions and likely 14th-century origins in the centre right. Other windows include C19 plain sashes and C20 casements. The front entrance features two plank doors, each with a plain round-headed overlight, set within chamfered stone pointed arches, and a broad, C13 pointed arch with a 3-light casement. A dressed stone buttress is on the left, possibly a former stack base. The river facade has a 1/1 sash window, a 2/2 sash window, and a 1/1 oriel with side lights beneath a slate pentice roof. A two-storey element to the left has large 3-light windows and a blocked portico with square columns and a prominent cornice. The left return side features three late-C19, 6/6 sash windows between columns, with studio windows above the cornice. A rear wing has a moulded pediment and parapet above two C19, 6/6 sashes between pilasters; painted brick sits below a partially blocked 6/6 sash, above a coursed rubble basement. The College Annexe interior features a C19 dogleg staircase with turned newels and stick balusters. The first floor has 4-panel doors, a half-glazed door and screen, and panelled shutters and architraves to the bay window. Coved ceilings with cornices, skirtings and architraves are also present. The ground floor has reeded and plain architraves, panelled risers and shutters, cornices, and skirting. The cellar has stone and brick lining, a plank door, and a stone fireplace. Nos. 14 & 16 have three C19 winder stairs with stick balusters. The first floor contains 4-panel doors, overlights, and fireplaces within corner stacks. The ground floor includes 4-panel doors, a plank door, a C19 slate and marble fireplace, two ogee-stop chamfered ceiling beams, a wall cupboard, an early C19 tiled floor in the hall, and a late C19 architrave to a door. A C18 fireplace with a shouldered surround and moulded tiles, and what appear to be C13 openings, are also present. The basement has stone and brick steps, a stone fireplace, a plank door and overlight, a wall cupboard, and a tiled floor.
