Description

The stables, coachhouse, and outhouses attached to the south-west corner of Middlewood House date from the late 18th century, with modifications made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rubble and features a roof made of corrugated iron and slate. It is arranged in an L-shape, with a north/south stable range and a corner tower, while the east/west coachhouse is located below, with other former uses above.

The north/south range has two storeys, with the main front facing west. It features a central break that projects forward and is topped with a pediment, flanked on each side by a lunette. There is a door beyond to the left of the break, which originally had a central door flanked by lunettes, but the right-hand lunette has been replaced by a sliding door from the late 20th century. The tower rises three storeys, with the first floor featuring lancet windows filled with iron casements. The top storey is open on all four sides and serves as a viewing platform, topped with a pyramidal roof that was noted to be in poor condition during a survey in July 1984. The ground floor includes a set of stone steps on the west side and an arched opening to the west.

On the east/west range, the south elevation has two first-floor windows, with the west window blocked and the other featuring a glazing bar sash. An entrance at the west end is accessible via stone steps. The north elevation includes the coachhouse at the west end. Inside, the first-floor tower room has a cast iron door.
