Description

This chest tomb, located about 5 yards south-west of the south porch of the Church of St Bartholomew, dates from the mid-18th century. It is made of finely carved sandstone and features a gadrooned and moulded capping, along with a moulded base. The tomb is adorned with decorated corner balusters and side and end panels that are surrounded by rich asymmetrical whirls. At the top centre of the side panels, there is a putto head. An eroded inscription on the south side reads "William Ship..., .., 1771".
