Description
The Woodhouse is a farmhouse with a 17th century core that was remodeled in the late 18th century, with further alterations in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The earlier core features partial timber-framing, which has been refaced with sandstone rubble at the rear and brick on the main elevations. The building has a hipped slate roof and an irregular plan, with a rectangular main house aligned north-west to south-east and the main entrance located on the south-east side. It has axial stacks and the main block extends to the north-east at the north-west end, with an additional wing extending to the north-west.
The farmhouse is two stories high, with cellars and attics, and features a dentilled eaves cornice. On the south-east front, there is a central pediment that slightly projects forward, with a blank lunette in the tympanum. A central semi-circular headed sash window with a pronounced keystone and decorative glazing bar is flanked by Venetian windows that have similar detailing. A central 20th century porch partially obscures a semi-circular headed doorway, which has a decorative fan-light and a six-panelled door.
On the south-west front, there is a central pediment with a similar blank lunette, and a central segmental headed casement window flanked by two-storey canted bays that feature similar segmental headed three-light casement windows. A central 20th century partly glazed lean-to porch leads to an inner ledged door.
Inside, the farmhouse retains a large mid-17th century framed newel staircase with twisted balusters that rises through two stories, as well as a second 18th century staircase with ramped handrails and turned balusters. Chamfered ceiling beams are visible on the western side of the house.
