Description
The Royal George is a public house that dates back to the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with a sandstone rubble plinth, some areas of wattle-and-daub, and painted brick infill, which is rendered on the entrance front. The roof is a combination of tiles and Welsh slate, with a hip at the southeast end.
The building has a rectangular plan oriented northwest to southeast, with a single-storey addition to the northwest and further additions from the 19th and 20th centuries at the rear and southeast end. It has a main axial stack and an additional gable-end stack, along with two entrances on the southwest front. It is likely that the building originally had a jettied front, but this has since been underbuilt.
The structure is two storeys tall, flanked by single-storey additions. On the left addition, there is a single vertical glazing bar sash window. The main block features a 3-light casement window, two 2-light windows, and a pair of similar windows on the first floor. The ground floor includes a pair of sash windows with single vertical glazing bars, along with two additional sash windows to the left of a canted bay window. This bay window is flanked by two partly glazed doors, all covered by a penticed roof supported on brackets. There is also a small light in a lean-to addition on the right side. The interior has been altered, but square panelled timber-framing is visible at the rear and partly within the interior.
