Description
This building is a barn and stables, located about 25 yards east of Stocks House. It likely dates from the 17th century and late 18th century. The structure is made of rubble, timber-frame, plaster, and woven infill panels, with weatherboards and a brick front added to the north. The roof is covered with plain tiles and pantiles. The building has a T-plan layout, with the head facing north. It consists of a three-bay barn aligned north to south, and a one-and-a-half-storey, two-window brick-fronted cross-wing aligned east to west.
The north/south part features a high rubble plinth with three panels up to the wall-plate, woven panels on the top two sections, and central opposed entries in the middle bay. The northern part, which is from the 17th century, has a framed gable on the west side. The north elevation is made of brick and includes a brick plat band, three segmental-headed openings on the ground floor, two square pitching holes on the first floor, and an entrance located to the left center.
Inside the north/south part, there are trusses with angled braces to the principals. The truss south of the opposed entrances has two parallel raking struts.
