Description

Lower Stocks is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with some later alterations. It features a timber-frame structure with brick and plaster infill, and brick foundations. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, and there are sandstone rubble and brick chimneys. The building has a T-plan layout with a cross-wing that is aligned east to west, attached to the north end of the main range.

The farmhouse has two storeys and attics. The east elevation displays a 1:2:2 window arrangement, with a gable front on the right side. On the left side, there is a lean-to that includes a late 19th-century two-pane window. The main range has two juxtaposed three-light wrought iron casements from the late 18th or early 19th century, while the gable features two early 20th-century casements positioned left of centre. The ground floor includes a two-light late 19th-century casement with a segmental head in the left lean-to, and the main range has a three-light casement of the same period, along with a mid-20th-century brick glazed porch and a contemporary glazed front door. The gable also has a canted late 19th-century bay window with two forward-facing lights.

The upper part of the main range features a section of close-studding beneath the two first-floor casements, with a gable front that has four panels extending from the cill to a large tie. Angle struts connect the corner posts to the tie, and above the tie are scissor braces. To the right of the bay window is a former entry with a triangular head. The west elevation has two prominent sandstone stacks. The interior was inaccessible during the last survey in October 1986, but it was noted by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHM) to have a 17th-century staircase. The RCHM mistakenly referred to Lower Stocks as Upper Stocks in their documentation.
