Watkins Children Memorial About 22 Metres North West Of Church Of St Mary

The Watkins children memorial is a chest tomb located about 22 metres north-west of the west tower of the Church of St Mary. It commemorates the Watkins children who died between 1757 and 1768. The tomb features bold corner balusters decorated with crossed sprigs of wheat, an inscription panel flanked by drapery swags, a moulded cornice, and a bevelled top. The inscription reads: "To the Memory of Seven of the Children of/ James Watkins Esq and Ann his Wife/ who departed this life in infancy/ James died July 12th 1757 Aged 3 Years/ Anne died Decr 25th 1759 Aged 3 Years/ James died Oct 16th 1759 Aged 7 Months/ Anne died May 3rd 1762 Aged 7 months/ James died April lst 1765 Aged 14 Days/ Thomas died March 12th 1768 Aged 5 Years/ Anne died April 18th 1768 Aged 3 Years." This memorial is a fine example of stone masonry and enhances the setting of the church, contributing to the group value of the other memorials in the churchyard.
