Description

The Kemble Monument is a tomb slab located approximately 15 meters south-east of the Church of St Mary in Welsh Newton. Dated 1679, it is made of sandstone ashlar and features a plain rectangular slab with an incised border and cross, surrounded by a later addition. The inscription reads, "I K/ Dyed the 22 August/ Anno Do/ 1679." This memorial commemorates John Kemble, a Catholic priest and martyr who was executed in 1679 due to the unrest caused by the Titus Oates plot. He was beatified in 1929 and canonized in 1970.
