Description
The Welsh Newton and Llanrothal war memorial is a structure dating from 1920, designed by Arthur Hall of Monmouth to honor those who fell in both the First and Second World Wars.
The memorial is made from local Buckholt sandstone and features a plain Latin cross that stands approximately 6 meters high. The cross has chamfers on its arms and tapers slightly from the head to the base. It is set directly into a square base that has depressed fields on two sides. One side is inscribed in black lettering: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF / WELSH NEWTON AND LLANROTHAL. / RIP," followed by the names of three men who were killed. The other side reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS / PARISH WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945," along with the names of four men who died in that conflict. The base is elevated on a platform of two steps.
In 2010, the memorial was cleaned with the assistance of a grant from the War Memorials Trust.
