Description

Upper Cwm Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse that was altered and expanded in the 18th century and late 19th century, with further alterations in the 20th century. The rear wing is timber-framed, with some remaining wattle-and-daub infill, and has 20th-century weatherboarding and cladding. The main house has a sandstone rubble plinth and painted rubble walls, with slate roofs. It has a roughly L-shaped plan extending to the south and east, with the main west front facing the road. A large stack is located at the junction of the L-shape, and there’s a further external stack to the south gable. The central entrance is on the west front. The house is two storeys high, with a string course marking the right (south) gable of the entrance. There are two windows on this gable; 2-light casements above and a 2-light 20th-century casement and a 4-light casement below, all with cambered heads, to the left of a slightly recessed doorway with a partly-glazed door. Steps lead to a further doorway on the first floor to the left, also with a cambered head and a ledged door, providing access to what was formerly a granary. Blocked 2-light and 3-light stone mullioned windows are located on the ground floor at the rear. Inside, a Tudor arch marks the doorway through to the rear wing, with a stud and plank panelled screen. There’s a large open fireplace. The farmhouse is likely connected to the establishment of a Jesuit mission in the area in 1622.
